Canadian Law: Affirmative Action Programs December 20, 2016
Being fair to everyone should not be a higher priority than students education.
A university in Manitoba has a new affirmative action program to select 45% of their students from diverse categories. This program does not make sense. There is such thing as bad teachers and good teachers and they should not be picked based on diversity.

The University of Manitoba announced that these five diverse categories of which students will be picked from are groups such as “indigenous people, students with disabilities, and those who identify as LGBT,” (The University of Manitoba with CBC News). This policy is supposed to broaden the staffs horizon and make them more diverse.
A professor from the university, Rodney Clifton, said that, "all students deserve the best possible teachers that they can get. We know that there's a substantial difference between good and poor teachers." Clifton does not believe that this new program will benefit the students. He also knows it will not help the students test scores. A 2014 report by the Council of Ministers of Education found that Manitoba’s math, science, and reading skills were the worst in Canada. How will picking teachers by diversity and not qualifications assist in strengthening these skills?

When students that have finished teachers college are being picked by universities or high school to become a teacher, why should it matter how diverse they are? The board that is hiring these students should be picking good teachers that are equipped and will be present for long term. They are not being racist by only picking certain teachers.
Some people may view a school as racist if they do not have a black person or a indigenous person as a teacher, but the reason for that being is probably because another person was more qualified than them. I think a student's education should be more important than making sure 45% of the teachers in a school are diverse.
Diversity in a workplace or a school is important but whoever has the highest or greatest qualifications for the job posting is the one that should be hired. Students will not learn better based on the ethnicity or sexuality of their teacher. Their education should be the first priority.
